The history of St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day is an annual feast day which celebrates Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland and a bishop who ministered in northern Ireland until his death in the mid-fifth century.
Originally, St. Patrick's Day was celebrated as a religious holiday. Although secular celebrations now exist, the holiday remains a religious observance in Ireland, for both the Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic Church.
In the mid-1990s, the Irish government began a campaign to use St. Patrick's Day to showcase Ireland and its culture. Since 1996, there has been a greater emphasis on celebrating and projecting an inclusive notion of "Irishness" rather than an identity based around traditional religious or ethnic allegiance.
